9. At the Critical Moment When Lisa Cox needed help most, she found out just how caring people can be--even strangers. The 23-year-old college student was walking to her car in a video store parking lot one night when a man--later identified as Dennis Hanson--leapt out of his pickup1 and put a gun to her head. “ Don’t say a word,” he hissed2. “ Just get in the truck.” Lisa didn’t stop to think about what he might do if she screamed.Terror tore the scream from her throat:“ Somebody, please help me!” Andria Fallesen, a video store employee, heard Lisa’s cries. That woman’s in trouble! she thought, racing to the lot. Just then, Charity Combs and her fiancé 3 Paul Deavers were coming out of another store and heard Lisa too. “ We’ve got to help!” Charity cried as they sprinted4 toward the truck.Their shouts distracted5 the would-be6 kidnapper- -and Lisa broke free. Andria grabbed Lisa’s arm. “ Come with me!” she cried, and the two raced to call 911.Meanwhile, Charity and Paul saw Hanson jump into his truck. “ Stop him!” they screamed. Bystander Craig Blue knew it was too late for that--but thinking quickly, he memorized the truck’s license plate number--and police arrested Hanson within minutes. At the trial, another witness, Gina McCann, testified against Hanson, who’d also confessed to abducting7 and raping two women and to four other attempted kidnappings. He pleaded guilty to aggravated kidnapping8 and was sentenced to 60 years. “ So many people went out on a limb9 for me,” Lisa says gratefully. “ It’s nice to know people care.” 1.pickup[5πικΘπ]n.
