7. At the Critical Moment “ Feel better, honey. I love you,” Erica Prater said, kissing her 11- year-old niece’s flushed cheek. “ I love you too," Heather Lepage coughed. When the child had awakened not feeling well enough to accompany her sister Stephanie, 10, to school, Erica wanted to stay with her. But she and her husband Harvey had just started new jobs, and neither could skip1 work. “ I’ll be just fine,” Heather had insisted, curling up2 on the couch. We’re just five minutes away, Erica told herself now as she reluctantly left for work. On her 11:15 a.m. break, Erica phoned to see how Heather was doing. “ I’m fine," she said. But moments after hanging up,Heather heard knocking at the front door. Who could that be? She wondered. Snapping3 off the TV, she crept4 to the blinds and peeked5 out. No one there! Erica and Harvey had taught the girls never to open the door to anyone at any time. To test them, Harvey would sometimes knock on the door and hide. If they answered, he’d cry, “ It’s the boogeyman6!" But this can’t be Uncle Harvey! Heather knew. Grabbing the portable phone, she dashed7 to her bedroom, away from all the doors, as she’d been taught. I’d better call Aunt Erica! She decided. But in her fear, she couldn’t recall the phone number! I’ve got to get the number from the book in the kitchen, she told herself. Tiptoeing8 down the hallway, she eyed the front door warily9. No noise had sounded since the first knocks. Maybe I was just hearing things, she hoped, slipping across the living room. But just as she reached the kitchen, a shadow loomed10 in the curtained glass of the back door. Heather froze. Someone’s breaking in! Run! Fleeing into the living room, she started for the front door, but suddenly hesitated. Maybe someone else is waiting out there! She panicked11. Hide! She told herself. Hearing the back door open, she ducked12 into her sister’s room. Where can I hide? She wondered wildly. The closet! She decided. Jumping inside, she pulled the door partially closed, afraid a slamming door would attract attention, and crammed herself into13 the corner behind clothes. Panting14 with terror, Heather dialed 911.“ I’m home alone and someone’s breaking into my house!" Heather told the operator. Then she confirmed her address. “ Help’s on the way,” the voice told her. “ Stay on the line.” “ No!” Heather gasped. “ He’s gonna hear me!” Clicking15 off, she pressed against the closet wall, praying she hadn’t been heard. He’ll kill me if he finds me, she thought, terrified. She heard dresser drawers crashing to the floor. He’s in Aunt Erica’s bedroom now! She realized. As the seconds ticked by, her heart pounded with every creak of the floor boards as the burglar made his way up the hallway to her room--ight next door! Anger surged16 through her as she listened to him dumping her dresser drawers on the floor. But another sound froze her blood--the ripping of clothes from hangers! He’s going through the closets! Heather panicked. And next he’ll come in here! Run! Her mind screamed. No! It’s too late! She realized. And in the next instant, she heard the squeak of the burglar’s sneakers17 creeping closer...the whine18 of the hinges as her sister’s bedroom door swung open...the rasp19 of heavy breathing that wasn’t her own! Oh, please, Heather prayed, tears streaming down her cheeks, don’t let him see me! Then a crash sounded from the kitchen followed by the pounding of footsteps. Then she heard a voice shouting, “ Police! Freeze!” Help’s here! Heather realized. But still terrified, she could only think of one thing to do: run! Leaping from the closet, she raced through the house, out the back door and into the street, screaming, “ Help me!” Only when police scooped her up did the thought hit her: I’m safe! When police came crashing in the back, the burglar had run out the front door --carrying a gun. A police dog had found him beneath a nearby house. Called to the phone at work, Erica worried. Is Heather feeling worse? When the voice on the other end identified himself as a sheriff’s20 deputy, she gasped, “ Heather! Is... is she okay!” As the officer assured her that Heather was fine and explained what had happened, Erica’s eyes flicked to the clock--11:30. “ But...but,” she sputtered21. “ I just spoke to her fifteen minutes ago!” Dashing home, Erica and Harvey found Heather waiting anxiously. “ I didn’t open the door!” she cried, racing to her aunt. “ I know you didn’t, honey,” Erica wept, sweeping her into her arms. Erica worried that Heather might be scared from her experience. But at bedtime, she looked up at her aunt and teased,“ Maybe I’ll be in the next Home Alone.” 1.skip[σκιπ]vt.
