(5 points) 　　M:Now the weather forecast. As for moderate gusty easterly winds, it will be mainly cloudy. Sunny intervals are expected tomorrow. The minimum temperature tonight will be around 15 degrees, and the maximum tomorrow around 19 degrees. At 4 o’clock, the temperature was 17 degrees Celsius, Humidity… no. Nothing percent. We don’t have one. 　　The national weather map shows a high pressure area all along the eastern coastline which brought them very pleasant, sunny weather from New York to Florida. But showers and thunderstorms are occurring from the Ohio River all the way south to the Gulf coast, depositing heavy amounts of rain over the southern states. 　　By far the worst of the storms has occurred in and around Texas. Some Texas stations have reported up to fifteen inches of rain in a twenty-four-hour period with high winds and thunderstorms. Two tornadoes were reported along the Gulf coast of Texas, but we have no confirmation of damage or injury. 　　Heavy amounts of snow were reported in the Rocky Mountain region with record cold temperatures in Denver and Boulder. As much as a foot of snow has fallen in some of the mountain stations. 　　In contrast, temperatures in Arizona and the desert Southwest went over the one-hundred-degree mark again today under bright, sunny skies. Erm, I think I took it off to wash my hands and I left it on the window ledge just in front of the wash basin. And I went back to my room and I realized I’d lost my watch, so I went back to the gentlemen’s toilets again to see if it was there, and it disappeared. I wondered if maybe one of the cleaners had picked it up. 　　W:No, did you ask the attendant if he’d seen it? 　　M:Er, the attendant wasn’t there at the time actually. I didn’t see anyone else there. 　　W:Right, can you give me some details, then, please? 　　M:Well, it’s erm… an ordinary sort of watch, you know, not one of those fancy digital things. 　　W:No. 　　M:It’s erm… 　　W:What make is it? 　　M:It’s a wind-up watch. I think it’s a Timex. Yes, it’s definitely a Timex. Erm, it’s got the date on it. Well, you know, a date indicator and a second hand and it’s got a, a brown leather strap on it as well. 　　W:Right. And what color’s the face? 　　M:It’s a creamy color. 　　W:O.K. Well, leave it with me and I’ll check with the attendant. You now have 15 seconds to read questions 14—16． 　　W:Populations tend to grow at a dramatic rate. This means that they progressively double. As an example of this type of growth rate, take one penny and double it every day for one month. After the first week, you would have only 64 cents, but after the fourth week you would have over a million dollars. 　　This helps explain why the population has come on “all of a sudden”. It took from the beginning of human life to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. That represents a time span of at least two million years. Then it took from 1830 to 1930 for world population to reach 2 billion. The next billion was added by 1960, only thirty years and in 1975 world population reached 4 billion which is another billion people in only fifteen years. 　　World population is increasing at a rate of 9,000 per hour, 220,000 per day, 80 million per year. This is not only due to higher birth rates, but to lower death rates as well. The number of births has not declined at the same rate as the number of deaths. 　　Some countries, such as Columbia, Thailand, Morocco, Costa Rica　, and the Philippines, are doubling their populations about every twenty-one years, with a growth rate of 3．3 percent a year or more. The United States is doubling its population about every eighty-seven years, with a rate of 0.8 percent per year. 　　Every time a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much of everything, including hospitals, schools, resources, food and medicine to care for its people. It is easy to see that this is very difficult to achieve for the more rapidly growing countries. You now have 20 seconds to read questions 17—20. 　　W:The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness. 　　As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and into public places, some of the country’s most talented artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms. 　　These recent initiatives（创新精神）owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience. 　　A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What better place to hold regular exhibitions of art? Peter Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975．Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates. 　　The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours, playful images and restful courtyards. 　　The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.
